When learning a new language, my biggest advice is to create a dice game. Sure a good old "Hello World" will give you a nice quick overview, but a good dice rolling game will have you encountering loops, variables, logic flow, user input validation, and more. This is one of several dice programs I made in Python.
Dragon Dice asks you what kind of dice to throw and how many? An example would be 2D10, meaning two ten sided dice. This was fun to make. It's not the best thing in the world, but it did help me understand a few things.
